Rēzekne Academy of Technologies

Rezekne Academy of Technologies (RTA) is a state-founded university type institution of higher education with unlimited international accreditation. RTA was founded in 1993 in Rezekne (Latvia).

RTA’s Research Institute for Regional Studies (REGI) has been an important player in sociolinguistics and cultural studies in Latvia for more than a decade, reaching out to European neighbours and presenting the highly multilingual region of Latgale all over the world.

As part of research at REGI, a diverse range of regional, ethnic, cultural and linguistic identities have been investigated. Further, REGI researchers have analysed the role of Latgalian (a regional language variety in the Eastern part of Latvia) in education, in the linguistic landscape, in tourism, etc.

In the context of several research programmes and projects funded by the Latvian state and supported internationally, REGI researchers have documented Latgalian and created two corpora: 1) MuLa – a Corpus of Contemporary Latgalian Texts (in cooperation with the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the University of Latvia; 2022) and 2) MuLaR – a Latgalian Speech Corpus. In addition, RTA has developed digital games, e-platform for learning Latgalian, and video lectures for teachers of Latgalian.

RTA is cooperating closely with international researchers of lesser-used languages working at institutions such as the Mercator European Research Centre and Fryske Akademy in the Netherlands, A. Mickiewicz University in Poznan (Poland), the European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) in Flensburg (Germany), and others.
